Last week I had the very rare opportunity of discussing career growth with a large number of colleagues. Hearing frustrations, working out solutions and planning goals for the future. It was so lovely listening to what people wanted to achieve and how small things would affect change so much. During the call I realized how lucky I am to have Liz Turner, the best mentor I could ever have imagined! 🎉
It's tough finding the right influence, so here's some important things to consider when choosing a good mentor:
Effective Communication: Liz listens actively to every mad idea I have, she asks thoughtful questions never dismissing me, and provides clear and constructive feedback I can work on in real time.
Patience and Empathy: I can share difficult situations or challenges I face. She’s such an amazing listener but also helps me navigate a solution or way to move forward.
Availability: Everyone is busy all of the time. She makes herself available for me. I never feel I’m bothering her. I’m a priority or at least she makes me feel that way haha.
Goal-Oriented: We set clear goals and objectives. Working too on developing a roadmap for achieving these goals. Each point is followed up with ways she can support.
Positive Role Model: Liz embodies superstar energy. Leading by example to inspire and motivate.
Respect for Individuality: I never feel our conversations are generalized or too broad. We discuss combining our unique strengths, weaknesses, and perspectives.
Confidentiality: Trust is essential and something I’ve never had in a manager. I feel safe!
Encouragement and Support: Every day is not a good day. Mentoring involves providing encouragement and support during both successes and setbacks. She celebrates my achievements and supports me during difficult times.
*Remember that finding and being a good mentor is an ongoing process, and it's important to continually assess and work on your progression. Good mentors can have a lasting impact on your personal and professional development. Choose wisely!*
